128 Carat Tiffany Diamond

The Montpelier Times reports on this exhibition showing an array of dazzling pendants, earrings, and bracelets comes the piece de resistance: the 128-carat Tiffany Diamond, one of the largest yellow diamonds in the world.

The gigantic gem is the show-stopper of "Bejewelled by Tiffany" at the Gilbert Collection, one of three galleries located at London's Somerset House on the Thames River.

The Tiffany & Co.-sponsored exhibit, which opens this weekend, uses jewels to trace the history of the celebrated American brand that has become synonymous with glamour.

The collection includes about 180 pieces that cover the first 150 years of Tiffany's history up to 1987, almost all of which have been loaned from the corporation's archives.

Rough Daimonds

We see gorgeous loose diamonds and diamond engagement rings in a jewelry showcase and we just assume that it always looked that way.

Not true.

Creating a gorgeous and brilliant diamond from the diamond rough is no small feat and requires the expert skill and patience of a master diamond cutter. There are 58 facets that need to be cut into a piece of diamond in the rough, in order to transform it into the beautiful diamond you are used to looking at. Additionally, the way that the diamond cutter fashions these facets is crucial in determining how brilliant and dispersive the polished diamond is going to be.

Daimond Engagement Ring

The owner of the largest colorless diamond ever sold at auction in Asia has named this stone The Shizuka Diamond. Christie’s sold the 101.27 carat, F color, VVS1 shield shape diamond in May 2008 for $6.21 million.

Lucida Daimonds

The Lucida diamond is made from the same rough as a well-cut round. Created by Tiffany's gemologists, the cut is similar to the Asscher and antique Cushion Cuts. Tiffany showcases the Lucida cut in a special four-prong ring shown below. The sculptural band has clean lines and soft curves that merge with the prongs in a sloping crisscross design, which, when viewed from the side, is reminiscent of cathedral arches.

Two Daimonds

It is very important that when choosing from a selection of loose diamonds to review the diamond certificate, referred to by diamond grading laboratories as a grading report. This is your assurance that you are getting a diamond that has been graded for color and clarity from an experienced gemologist. Never buy a diamond that does not have this report or has a certificate from a lab with lower color and clarity grading standards.

Daimonds Varaity

The Cullinan In Pieces.

The Prime Minister of Transvaal, Louis Botha, suggested that the diamond be presented as a gift to King Edward VII. Due to lingering rancor after the Boer War, the gift did not sit well with Parliament, which only voted 42 to 19 in favor of its acceptance. After much debate and at Winston Churchill’s urging, the king accepted The Cullinan. In gratitude, Churchill was presented with a replica of the diamond; he enthusiastically displayed it to friends, sometimes exhibiting it on a silver platter.

Some Observations on Shapes

Round is the most popular of all the diamond shapes, perhaps because it is the most brilliant.

The Heart shape is basically a clefted Pear. With heart shape diamonds, personal appeal is important. Not every heart will have pleasing proportions for all people. Some prefer broad hearts. Some prefer narrow.

The Oval shape is much like round. Although it is elliptical, oval stones get many of the same angles of cut as round diamonds. Oval diamonds are sometimes set in rings with their length running with the length of the finger when worn.

The Pear shape is a combination of a round brilliant and a marquis cut. Pear shaped diamonds often look stunning when set point up in pendants and earrings, due to the "Teardrop" shape.

Diamond Facts: The Four Cs

The four c's refer to the cut, clarity, colour, and carat or weight of diamonds. Each of the four are very important.

Cut

The cut refers to those parts of the diamond which determine its reflective properties.

Diamonds that are poorly cut do not return the light that enters, leaving both their beauty and their value diminished. If the cut is poor, the quality of the other three Cs cannot save a diamond's value.

Color

The coloring of a diamond is another of the factors that determine its price. Other than white, or colorless, there are several different colors of diamonds. These can include orange, blue, yellow, green, red, brown, and the very rare pink and light blue. White (colorless) diamonds are the most popular.

Three-Stone Diamond

Three-Stone Diamond Ring in Hand-Made Platinum. One 2.05 carat (G/SI-1--Certified) Oval center diamond. Two .41 carat side diamonds, pear-shape, D/VS-1. $29,400.00.

Loose Diamonds

One of our specialties is loose diamonds. Loose Diamonds from The Diamond Broker are certified by either the GIA or AGS. We do not deal in diamonds without certification.

If you prefer loose stones to those already placed in a setting, you probably have something specific in mind. Chances are, we have the diamond you're looking for.

If we don't have exactly what you desire, consider allowing us the privilege of finding the right diamond for you. Diamond brokers have extensive resources for locating diamonds of specified shapes and value.

Diamond Facts: The Quality of Color

When we speak of the Color of a diamond, we refer to its "whiteness", or lack of color. Of course, this does not apply to fancy color diamonds, which can range in color from blue to light yellow. Fancy colored diamonds, as they are called, are graded differently.

When grading the whiteness or lack of color in a diamond, stones are compared to a standardized scale under very strict lighting conditions. Without controlling the value, hue and intensity of the lighting conditions under which stones are viewed, locating a diamond on the color scale would be pointless.

The image which follows shows how minute differences can be. This represents colorlessness (left) to a yellow tint (right).

Diamond Solitaires

A diamond solitaire is an individual stone. Solitaires can be featured in pendants, rings, earrings - even bracelets. Solitaires are magnificent points of focus that speak of elegance and great value.

Obvioulsy, when it comes to solitaires, large stones have a greater impact than smaller ones. In any case, if a diamond is to be featured, it must be exquisite.

At Glamorous Diamond Earrings, we trade in certified diamonds only. Our diamond solitaires come with GIA or AGS certification. You can be sure that your diamond solitaire is the exquisite stone you need.

Weighing Diamonds: The Carat

Diamonds are measured by weight in "carats". Note that the measure of purity for gold is "karat" with a "k" and has nothing to do with diamonds.

n the chart above, the relative size of diamonds ranging in weight from ½ to 8 carats are shown.

Contrary to the widely held belief that diamonds form from coal under pressure, coal seams (deposits) never reach the depth inside the Earth's mantle to be subjected to pressures great enough to do the job. Instead, diamonds are formed from carbon in an igneous rock called kimberlite - which may be composed of carbon-12, the isoptope of carbon that is characteristic of living things.

Diamonds normally form into octahedral (8 sided) crystals, although numerous variations on the cubic form are found in nature. In any case, the exact circumstances that produce very large diamonds are quite rare.

Because the larger a diamond is the more rare it is, the value of diamonds increases rapidly with weight. A 6 carat diamond will weigh twice as much as a 3 carat diamond, but the cost can be much more than double for stones of similar quality.

How Many Carats Are Enough?

When choosing diamonds, size need not be your only consideration. All of the factors that determine the value of a diamond should be taken into account. Ultimately, the purpose of your diamond will determine many of the characteristics of the satisfactory stone.

Contact The Diamond Broker and we'll guide you through the process of selecting the diamond that is right for you.

The Shapes of Diamonds

Shapes to suit every fancy. Each of the popular diamond shapes has its own charm and appeal. From the brilliant Rounds to the stately Marquis, every possible shape for diamonds is a treasure.

Diamond Clarity

The clarity of a diamond is a reference to the existence of any flaws in the diamond. Diamonds may have flaws either in their interior (inlcusions) or on their surface (blemishes).

When diamonds are graded for clarity, the term "blemish" isn't used. All flaws, inclusions and blemishes alike, are referred to as inclusions for simplicity sake.

The Diamond Clarity Grades

Diamonds are graded for clarity using the jewelers' 10x loupe. Grades range from "F", Flawless to "I" Included, with Included grades raning from 1 to 3. "Flawless", obviously is for diamonds without inclusions (or blemishes) of any sort. "Included 3" diamonds would have blemishes and/or inclusions that are visible to the naked eye.
